What is Attari?
The literal and conventional meaning of the word 'Attari' is given in glossary. (Click the word to read it.)
If you are new to Islam and would like to understand the different sects and jurisprudence I would recommend reading the Wikipedia entry on Divisions of Islam. (However take it with a pinch of salt; don't believe what ever you read, as such entires are usually a victim of religious vandalism.)
Simply stated, Attari are Muslim belonging to Sunni Sect and following the jurisprudence (Madhhab) of Hanafi (Barelwi division). At a spiritual level they are associated with Qadri order. They are followers of Muhammed Ilyas Attar Qadri.
So are Attari the 'right' Muslims to follow? You bet! (I say that from my personal experience of the journey to seek truth.) The Sunni are the mainstream followers of Islam. Attari is simply a group promoting the Sunni ideology. But what I would tell you is not to just take my word for it, but explore yourself. Read, study history, and seek the truth! Seek and ye shall find!
How many Attaris are there? Well its difficult to quote exact numbers, but Attaris are growing fast! They started about 28 years back and now there are millions. One visit to the Dawat-e-Islami annual congregation at Multan (Pakistan) can prove it.
Earlier Attaris were mainly concentrated in Pakistan. But now Attaris are spreading worldwide, especially in India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, France, Germany,... Officially it is stated that Dawat-e-Islami has presence in more than 60 countries. An idea of this can be ascertained from the Wikipedia entry on Dawat-e-Islami. (However take it with a pinch of salt; don't believe what ever you read, as such entires are usually a victim of religious vandalism.)
Attari can be recognized by the characteristic green turban and white dress. However not all Attaris wear a turban. It is not compulsory to wear one if you do want to become an Attari and join the movement to spread the true message of Islam.
